Abstract

This article discusses the impact of the specifics of communication of adolescents with mental retardation on the development of their personality, which is significant for the successful socialization and social integration of people with mental retardation. The purpose of the article is to study the relationship between sociometric status and the level of self-rating of adolescents with mild mental retardation. In the study, the methods "Sociometry" by J. Moreno and "Self-Rating Study" by Dembo-Rubinstein were used.

The results of the study indicate the presence of a relationship between the sociometric status of adolescents with mental retardation and their level of self-rating. Adolescents with mental retardation preferred for communication in most cases have an adequate level of self-rating, while those who are rejected are characterized by an overestimated or underestimated level of self-rating. Self-rating of mentally retarded adolescents with high sociometric status is more realistic, they better understand themselves and others, and this determines their high sociometric status.

Overestimated and especially underestimated levels of self-rating are a consequence of the difficulty in understanding one's personality and the individuality of others, this does not contribute to a high sociometric status.
